Welcome to Homeless Helpers
Personal Statement
I’ve been there.
After being intermittently homeless in my early 30s with a drug and alcohol problem, I eventually got the help I desperately needed, but it was a difficult and arduous path. The help I eventually received inspired me to help others with drug and alcohol problems who are struggling with the destitution of homelessness.
One day, at a time when I was back on my feet, I gave a young homeless man who was in really rough shape some money, then went about my day. Upon reflecting on my brief interaction with the man, I realized that he needed more than just a handout of money, probably needed medical attention, and I had just walked away. I then recognized that I was part of a culture that mostly ignores the suffering that lies out in the open for all to see. I was then inspired to do volunteer work for local non-profits, and work for a homeless shelter where I got to know many clients as they transitioned through the shelter.
What I discovered was a population of struggling, suffering people, many of whom had horrific childhoods, had encountered domestic violence or experienced other forms of trauma, or had simply just experienced some really bad luck and circumstances that led to their being homeless. I understood their desperate situations and felt a strong need to help them—I was inspired to do more.
